21 Days of Prayer

We believe that a foundation of prayer is absolutely essential if we’re going to see God move in our church and in our city like we believe he wants to. So, from 19th May to 8th June, in the lead up to Pentecost we want to unify as a whole church in 21 days of increased prayer activity and intensity as we all cry together “Come Holy Spirit”. This coincides with the 24/7 Prayer Pentecost Prayer Initiative where many churches right across our nation are committing to night and day prayer in the lead up to Pentecost.
Each Location will be engaging with this differently so get involved, and at the very least commit to using our weekly prayer guide to pray at home throughout the 21 days. You can access a digital version of the prayer guide here. However you join in, let’s use this time to cry out to God together, expectant for him to draw people to himself right across our city. Let’s pray church!

21 Days of Prayer (East)

From 19 May to 8 June our whole church is taking 21 days to really focus on prayer. This is something we’re doing along with all Locations of The Street and it also aligns with 24/7 New Zealand’s Pentecost Prayer Initiative.

While consistent prayer is important, it can be helpful to have seasons where we encourage people to come together for focused prayer.

Over the 21 days of prayer, we’re encouraging people to do something that would be a stretch for them in prayer. We’ve aimed to set this at a level which will feel like a sacrifice but not over the top. There are a couple of ways to get involved.

Daily Prayer Guide: We’ve put together a daily prayer guide and poster to bring a different prayer focus for each day of the week. This is a baseline to encourage daily prayer over the 21 days. If you don’t have a paper copy you can access a digital version here.

Prayer Gatherings: We’re also hosting three prayer gatherings each week over the 21 days. We’re encouraging everyone to try and at least attend one each week. We know this will be a stretch but it’s for a short time and for a great purpose. Who knows what God will do as we gather together in a time of focused prayer.

The details for the prayer gatherings are:

  • Each Wednesday evening at Miramar Central School - 7:30-8:30 pm (21 May, 28 May, 4 June)

  • Each Sunday morning at Miramar Central School - 7:00-8:00 am (25 May, 1 June, 8 June)

  • Each Thursday at the Cathedral - 12:00-1:00 pm (22 May, 29 May, 5 June)

Prayer Walking the Eastern Suburbs

As a church, we’re seeing God move powerfully in drawing people to himself. The cry of our heart is to see everyone in the eastern suburbs have the opportunity to respond to the message of Jesus. We’re praying that God would embolden our sharing of Jesus and enable people to believe. With this in mind, we’ve been working with other churches and have set the goal to together pray around every street in the eastern suburbs before Easter 2025—that’s just three weeks away.

The way we’re measuring this is through an app called Holy Ground. It’s easy to download and get started. We’d love for you to join in with this. Just imagine the impact if every one of us here and across the other churches took just one hour each week to prayer walk somewhere new. You could do it while walking the dog or by repurposing your walk with a Christian friend.

If this is new for you or you’d like some tips on how to do this well, you can grab a flier at services over the next three Sundays. Phil Coates at Gateway put it together. It’s got ideas on things to pray for and verses to declare as you pray and walk.

So download the app and hit “start a walk” and go and pray!

A big thank you from Open Doors

It was wonderful to have Ryan here with us a few weeks ago, sharing about the work of Open Doors. They wanted us to pass on a message of thanks to you all for your generosity. Together as a church we raised $2670 which will now contribute to the incredible work they do with persecuted Christians around the world. Thank you so much.

Missions Update from Rachel and Nelson in Mexico

Missions is a big part of who we are as a church. We love to support missionaries who have answered a call to go out and make disciples full-time.

Rachel was part of The Street community and felt called to Missions. She did her DTS with YWAM in Mazatlan in Mexico, and then met Nelson while at the base. They got married at the beginning of last year. They are continuing in Mazatlan and are involved in a number of different ministries at the base.

Youth at East (Year 9-13)

This year we're planning some fun sessions for our youth at East. These will be geared around deeper connections with each other and with God. We are planning to do these more or less monthly on a Sunday after church, so that we can do lunch and then some discussion or a more social activity.

If you have a heart for our youth and would like to contribute by being part of their spiritual walk with Jesus, please contact Timothy Teng on 021520527 or timothytwe@gmail.com.

We're looking for people who would love to be part of this, regardless of how much time you can commit this year. You would be welcome even to just be part of our Whatsapp group so that you can be praying for our youth, or to take a more active role and join or lead some of our sessions.

Come prepared for worship Sunday 24th

We have one Sunday each month with no worship team, where we allow time and space to be led in worship by one another. This is your one week’s notice to come prepared for that on Sunday 24th September. You might want to share a Psalm or another scripture. You might have a prayer on your heart. Or you might want to lead us all in a song. Or something else! Whatever is on your heart to bring, let’s do it joyfully in order to glorify King Jesus together as His church! It’s going to be beautiful!

Potential new elders

In addition to the pastors and other staff, The Street has an eldership board that carries out a combination of governance and shepherding for our church.

Elders are volunteers who provide spiritual oversight for the overall church, as well as being available at our local services to support the local leaders and be available to the congregation.

Now that we are meeting in even more multiple locations, we want to ensure we have a local eldership presence at each of our locations.

We want to propose Andrew Smaill and Peter Martin as potential elders. We are giving the church three weeks to pray and provide feedback before the elders decide whether they will join the eldership.

Andrew attends our Night Location, and Peter is part of our East Location.

If you have any feedback to provide, please contact elders.chair@thestreet.org.nz. Your email will go to the chair of our eldership board, Matt Conway.

IMPORTANT: DATE AND VENUE CHANGE FOR TOGETHER

We are no longer able to hold our next Together gathering at Wellington High School, so we have a change of date and location for this. Please put Sunday the 29th of October into your calendar now and note this will now be held at Wellington College. We believe this is a significant moment as we gather as one church and celebrate the incredible work God is doing in and through us. More details and registration information will be made available later in September.

Refugee Resettlement

A group of people from across locations at The Street are leading a refugee resettlement group to welcome refugees from overseas and help them establish a new life in Wellington. This is a practical way for us to be known for making a difference and to be Jesus' hands and feet through these tangible expressions of love.

In the coming months, The Street Church will welcome two refugees to Wellington to help them establish new lives here—one from Iraq and one from Palestine. We all can be involved in this initiative, so check out this video from Mark and Jerram of the Refugee Resettlement Group.
